    Addressable System

    System in which signals from detectors, manual call points or any other devices are individually

    Alarm receiving centre ARC

    Continuously manned premises, remote from those in which the fire detection and fire alarm system is fitted, where the information concerning the state of the fire alarm system is displayed and/or recorded, so that the fire and rescue service can be summoned

    Geographical subdivision of the protected premises, in which the fire alarm warning can be given

    Aspirating smoke detection

    Route forming part of the means of escape from any place in a premises to a final exit.

    Doorway or other suitable opening leading to a place of safety

    Final exit

    An exit from a building where people can continue to disperse in safety and where they are no longer at danger from fire and/or smoke.

    Work of inspection, servicing and repair necessary in order to maintain the efficient operation of the installed system.

    Means of escape

    Structural means whereby safe routes are provided for persons to travel from any place within a premises to a place of safety

    Prestige Fire Extinguishers

    Stainless steel or highly polished aluminium fire extinguishers.

    Responsible Person

    Person or persons responsible for, or having effective control over, fire safety provisions adopted in or appropriate to the premises or building or fire hazard.

    Safety sign

    Sign which gives a general safety message, obtained by a combination of a colour and geometric shape and which, by the addition of a graphical symbol, gives a particular safety message

    Servicing

    Routine process of work on the system (including cleaning, realignment, adjustment and replacement) carried out at predetermined intervals

    Travel Distance

    Actual distance that a person needs to travel within a building to the nearest exit, allowing for the layout of walls, partitions and fittings.

    Visual Alarm Device

    Device which generates a flashing light to signal to the occupants of a building that a fire condition exists.

  • W

    Wheeled Fire Extinguisher

    Larger units with a wheeled trolley to aid safe manoeuvre of the unit. Popular on airport aprons, port sides, large warehouses, chemical and petroleum plants.

    Zone Plan

    Diagrammatic representation of a building, showing specific topographic information and the division of the building into detection zones.
